PSHE
Our Vision for Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education PSHE
and Relationships, Sex and Health Education RSHE
At Our Lady’s we believe PSHE and RSHE education equips children with the knowledge,
understanding, skills and strategies required to live healthy, safe, productive, capable,
responsible, and balanced lives. Developing every child as a unique human is central in all
we do.
Intent
Our aim is to celebrate and develop every child to be the best they can be. They will be given opportunities to enable them to develop feelings for and to empathise with the feelings and actions of others, seeing points of views and beliefs other than their own. They will explore ethical issues and can apply their personal values to situations, giving reasons for their decisions and actions. We aim to promote positive Mental Health for every member of our school community including, staff, pupils, and families. PSHE and RSHE education also makes a significant contribution to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural
(SMSC) development, their behaviour and safety, and to their emotional wellbeing.
Implementation
At Our Lady’s we implement a progressive PSHE and RSHE curriculum that builds on prior
knowledge and skills year on year. PSHE is taught through the Jigsaw scheme. Jigsaw
ensures that there is progression through the years. Each year group is taught the same
theme at the same time. The six themes are: Being Me in My World; Celebrating Difference;
Dreams & Goals; Healthy Me; Relationships; and Changing Me. The six core themes are
revisited, reinforced, and extended in age and stage-appropriate contexts. RSHE is taught
across the school for a focus week in the Summer term through the ‘Journey in Love’
scheme. Children are taught in separate year groups across key stage two due to the age,
stage and content covered. RSHE assists pupils to cope with the changes at puberty,
introduces them to a wider world and enables them to make an active contribution to their
communities. Jigsaw and RSHE are taught in line with our Catholic ethos at Our Lady’s.
Impact
Above all we measure the impact through the rounded holistic development of every
individual child to prepare them for the next stage of their schooling. This is nurtured by
children’s ability to recognise, accept and shape their identities, accommodate difference
and change, to manage their emotions and to communicate effectively.
‘I have come that you might have life and live it to the full.” John 10:10
At Our Lady's, our programme of study is based around the Jigsaw Scheme. Weekly sessions are held in each classroom and some of the work contributes to a class floor book. The programme of study is suitable for all of the children within the school and covers the areas of:
1. Being Me in My World (Autumn 1)
Includes understanding my place in the class, school and global community as well as devising Learning Charters.
2. Celebrating Difference (Autumn 2)
Includes anti-bullying (cyber and homophobic bullying included) and diversity work.
3. Dreams and Goals (Spring 1)
Includes goal-setting, aspirations for yourself and the world and working together.
4. Healthy Me (Spring 2)
Includes drugs and alcohol education, self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices.
5. Relationships (Summer 1)
Includes understanding friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills.
6. Changing Me (Summer 2)
Includes sex and relationships education in the context of coping positively with change (includes age-appropriate sex education).
Please see our Jigsaw Subject Overview for more detail on our PSHE programme.
Relationship, Sex and Health Education
The program we use for Relationship, Sex and Health Education Programme is a scheme approved by the Diocese called Journey in Love. We use this as well as some materials from Jigsaw, the PSHE scheme we follow, ensuring this is taught inline with Christian beliefs and values.
Please refer to the RSHE policy for more information.
