Our Vision for Science

At Our Lady’s we believe having a good understanding of scientific knowledge and
conceptual understanding helps support pupils in Science and across all curriculum areas.
Furthermore, we aim to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the natural and
man-made world and a respect for the environment that will remain with them for the rest
of their lives.
Intent
- Our aim is to develop pupils’ scientific skills through practical work the skills of
observation, prediction, investigation, interpretation, communication, questioning
and hypothesizing.
- Pupils are given the opportunity to critically question the world around them. This
enables pupils to appreciate that we do not always know the answers when carrying
out scientific enquiry as the world around them is continually changing and
developing.
Implementation
- At Our Lady’s, we implement a progressive Science curriculum that builds on prior
knowledge and skills year on year.
- We develop pupil’s understanding of scientific ideas by using different types of
scientific enquiry to answer their own questions, including observing changes over
time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things, carrying out simple
comparative tests, and finding things out using secondary sources of information.
- We will encourage pupils to understand how science can be used to explain what is
occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse causes.
Impact
As children have progressed through their Science learning they will acquire the appropriate
age-related knowledge linked to the science curriculum, as well as the skills which equip
them to progress from their starting points. As they move onto the next stage of their
school journey children will have the understanding that science has changed our lives and
continues to do so daily, and that it is vital to the world’s future prosperity.
