Geography

Geography intent
At Our Lady’s, we believe that Geography plays a unique and vital role in a child’s education.
Geography at Our Lady’s seeks to give children the knowledge and understanding of their own place
in the world and that of others they share it with. We aim to develop well rounded and successful Geographers by:
• Teaching them to use maps, atlases and globes to identify the United Kingdom and its countries,
as well as the countries, continents and oceans studied at the appropriate key stage.
• Developing pupils’ understanding of a compass, direction and locational features to build their
knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world.
• Showing them various recognisable landmarks, human and physical features.
• Opportunities to use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical
features in the local area using a range of methods.
Implementations:
• Lessons are both practical and written in nature to ensure children are engaged and inspired.
• Lessons have clear objectives. These lesson objectives are shared with the children and they
understand what they are learning and why.
• The learning objectives show clear progression with activities differentiated for different groups.
• At the beginning of each topic, children are shown how their study of geography fits in with what
they have learnt prior. By doing this, they will then have a clearer understanding of how their skills
have progressed.
Impact
• The children will know more, remember more and understand more about Geography.
• Children will understand and use the key skills of: using maps, atlases and globes; use of
compasses and direction; recognising landmarks and fieldwork to observe, measure, record and
present the human and physical features.
• As geographers children will learn lessons from Geography so they can understand the country
and the wider world they live in.
