Our Vision for Computing and on-line Safety.
At Our Lady’s our vision is to install a love for computing and technology and use it in a safe,
engaging and purposeful way.
INTENT:
We want to provide learning opportunities and transferrable skills by teaching children the four
main areas in computing: programming, multi-media, technology in our lives, data handling and online safety.

Our aim is for children to become competent in all areas of the computing curriculum, to enable
them to develop skills in the ability to program effectively.

Our aim is for children to be competent in using a range of multi-media to present information to
others including their peers. To develop their keyboard skills, and combine a range of media
confidently to enhance their learning and understanding in all areas of the curriculum.

We want to ensure children are aware of technology used around them, how to use it confidently
and safely. Understand the need to check websites for reliability and be aware not everything we
read on the internet is true!

Our aim is for all children to stay safe on-line at School and home. Also for children to know what to
do if they see anything on-line that worries or upsets them.

We want children to communicate responsibility and respectfully on-line.

IMPLENTATION
These four key areas will to taught once weekly following the ELIM planning- which is the computing
curriculum and on-line safety guidance for Schools. Planning is followed by all teachers to ensure
children develop their skills in all these to equip children for an increasingly digital society.
Programming- Children will experience programing from the EYFS using Beebots to input
straightforward instructions and then children noticing an output. From Keystage 1, children will
continue their programming journey using a range of software including purple mash, and later on in
lower key stage one, Scratch Junior. In Key stage two, children are introduced to the programing
software Scratch. Children build on their previous knowledge over the years to support them to
understand the terms such as input, output, algorithm, sequence, and repetition etc

Multi-Media- Children will be given opportunities to use a range of media to present information
from topics they have been learning about in other areas of the curriculum. This encourages
transferrable skills. Children use software to achieve this such as purple mash, and Google slides on
the Chrome books. Children develop their ability to combine a range of media, from adding text and
images in key stage one moving onto adding adding hyperlinks and animation in key stage 2.

Technology in our lives- Children in key stage 1 will think about the technology they use at home
and school and how these pieces of technology can help us to make our lives more straight forward.
Children in both key stages will be looking at the reliability of the internet, and not to believe
everything we read on-line. Children will develop their understanding of how to carry out safe but
effective searching on-line.
Data Handling- Children will look at how data is collected and presented. Children will carry out
investigations, collect data, and present it in a range of ways using different software. They will
share their findings and analyse these with their peers. Children will make links to Mathematics
during this unit.
On-line safety- This follows the Active Bytes scheme of learning also provided by ELIM. Active Bytes
sessions are taught once every half term outside the computing lesson. These lessons focus on a
variety of aspects, all around staying safe on-line at School and home.

We continue to work towards our 360 Safe Accreditation. This is a large project, which includes
meeting set criteria for a number of strands, which require action, evidence and impact. As part of
this on-going project, we have a digital leaders group which consists of KS2 pupils. Our aim is to help
lead the school into becoming safer on-line. This has included On-line Safety Assemblies planned,
and delivered by the Digital Leaders, also messages to families regarding guidance to posting photos
on-line after School plays and assemblies.

IMPACT
The impact of our computing intent is clear- children are competent in all the four areas of the
computing curriculum, and understand how technology can aid us in our lives now and in the future.
Children will also know how to stay safe on-line and be polite and respectful on-line.

On-line Safety at Our Lady’s’

Children are taught on-line safety sessions once every half term in school in their class and is taught separately to the Computing sessions.  At Our Lady’s we follow eLIM lessons plans.  The e-Learning and Information Management (eLIM) Service is an Education Technology which is part of Somerset's Support Services for Education.

Elim supports our School to develop innovative, engaging, effective and safe use of technology.  Part of this is providing us with resources to deliver effective and interactive on-line safety lessons.

Each class follows a set of plans called ‘Active Bytes’ during our on-line safety sessions.  These termly lessons and assemblies (in class) focus on these themes:

Autumn Term: I am kind and responsible

Spring Term: I am safe and secure

Summer Term: I am healthy

Each term lessons and assemblies are focused on the above themes and are age appropriate to each year group and stage of development.  Firstly, children explore what it means to be kind and responsible on-line, and taking responsibility for their actions.  Following on from this children learn how they can stay safe when using technology as well as how to stay secure such as keeping personal information safe.  Lastly, children also discover ways to stay healthy on-line including building healthy habits when using technology (please see images below) These posters are also age appropriate and displayed in the children’s classrooms.

We also carry out a PREVENT session annually, which is explored sensitively.  Children in EYFS and KS1 think about who can join in different celebrations, and then they consider how celebrations can be spoilt and how to stop this.  Children in KS2 explore a number of themes including how their actions affect themselves and others, to care about other people’s feelings and to try to see things from their points of view.
