Religious Education
Religious Education is at the centre of our curriculum. We follow guidelines set by the Diocese of Clifton, which includes 10% of the timetable each week devoted to the Religious Education curriculum.
We teach RE in year groups as follows:
EYFS - Miss McDougall
Year 1 - Mrs Loftus/Mrs Berry
Year 2 - Mrs Loftus/Mrs Berry
Year 3 - Mrs Woodcock/Mrs Browne
Year 4 - Mrs Woodcock/Mrs Browne
Year 5 - Mrs Brannagan Fuller
Year 6 - Mrs Woodcock
This academic year (2024-2025) EYFS and all year groups are being taught the new RE Curriculum which follows The New Religious Education Directory 2023.
Year 1 and 2 are following the year 1 curriculum and year 4,5 and 6 are following the year 4 curriculum. This gives year 2, 5 and 6 the foundations to their new curriculum which will be introduced next year.

At the beginning of each Branch the children talk about and record 'What do I know'. At the end of each two weeks' learning the children then talk about and record 'What have I learnt'. This enables the teacher to monitor each pupil's progress and the pupil to recognise the progress they are making. At the end of the Branch the children talk about and record 'How will I respond.' This enables the children to demonstrate their understanding and makes links in their everyday lives. This enables the teacher to assess the children's learning.
At the end of each lesson the children are given 'next steps' learning which helps them to reflect and share their views and opinions and make links to their lives.
Our RE Curriculum incorporates other faith teaching during planned faith weeks. During these weeks the class will focus on a faith during their writing, guided reading, RE and topic sessions. Looking at the beliefs, festivals and celebrations, special objects and clothing as well as stories from that faith. This year our Faith weeks will focus on Hinduism and Sikhism.
Children are taught to respect and value the beliefs of others in a non-judgemental environment. We aim for children to develop their religious and moral understanding to sustain them through later life and to help them develop an understanding of Christian beliefs and the faiths of others.
Relationships, Sex and Health Education
The programme we use for Relationship, Sex and Health Education Programme is a scheme approved by the Diocese called Journey in Love. We use this as well as some materials from Jigsaw, the PSHE scheme we follow, ensuring this is taught inline with Christian beliefs and values.
Please refer to the RSHE policy for more information.
Please see our Jigsaw Subject Overview for more detail on our PSHE programme.
We welcome Fr Francis to Our Lady's.
The new Priest for St Luke and St Teresa's Church.
Intent Statement We are a Catholic school and we are committed to the Catholic Faith, recognising and valuing every individual as special and unique in the image and likeness of God. Religious Education at Our Lady of Mount Carmel respects and promotes each child’s innate capacity for wonder, awe, reverence and spirituality. Our Religious Education curriculum encourages our children to be taught about God’s love; they learn about their unique place within the home, school and parish community; they learn about their Christian responsibilities; are provided with experiences of Church, Catholic and Christian traditions as well as being taught to be respectful and understanding of people and traditions from other faith backgrounds.
Implementation Statement Religious Education is taught according to the doctrine of the Catholic Church as required by Clifton Diocese. Teachers use a scheme called God Matters and lessons focus on both providing the children with a knowledge of the Catholic Faith and leading them to an understanding of the significance of religion in their lives. They are encouraged to give a variety of responses to what they have learned and to measure their own development as Christians by reflecting on their relationships with others and with God. Closely linked to our teaching of RE is the way in which this is reflected in the Catholic life of the school. The children pray at regular intervals during the day: start of the morning, at lunchtime and at the end of the day. Prayer and spirituality are at the heart of every day’s learning. Prayer and Liturgy is another important part of the religious life of our community. We pray together, sing hymns together and reflect on aspects of our Faith within the context of our own experiences. We also regularly celebrate Mass together as a community throughout the year at St Luke and Teresa’s Catholic Church in Wincanton.
Impact Statement Above all, our wish is that we prepare children and young people to live not only in a local society, but also in a region, a national community, and the global community. Our RE teaching at Our Lady’s develops pupils’ understanding of themselves and the rich diversity of Wincanton, Somerset, the UK and the world. “Dear young people, do not bury your gifts, your talents that God has given you! Do not be afraid to dream of great things” Pope Francis
Hall Displays
Each class focussed on prayer and reflection. They used their ideas to create a display where children were given the option to write prayers, drawer prayers or give ideas of where people could be calm.
